Gaston Leroux (1868-1927) was a French journalist turned novelist who gave the world one of its most enduring Gothic creations. The Phantom of the Opera turned the Paris Opera house into a labyrinth of obsession, music, and underground lakes, a story so vivid it has never left the stage. But Leroux was more than one phantom: The Mystery of the Yellow Room is regarded as one of the finest locked-room mysteries ever written, a puzzle so ingeniously sealed that detective fiction still measures itself against it.
