Edward Lear

Edward Lear (1812–1888) wrote as if English were a toy box — and then proved how much feeling you can pack into a riddle. Best known for popularising the limerick and for The Owl and the Pussycat, he was also a landscape painter and a traveller who spent much of his life on the road, drawing distant coasts and writing home in a voice both comic and lonely. Childhood epilepsy and lifelong shyness made society difficult; nonsense became his way of speaking freely. Lear's verses invite children to play and adults to notice the ache beneath the joke — a rare writer who remains both utterly silly and unexpectedly kind.
