Western Kingbird

The western kingbird (Tyrannus verticalis) is a flycatcher of open country across western North America, recognised by its grey head, yellow belly, and black tail edged in white. From exposed perches it sallies after insects, returning with a sharp, twittering call that birders learn early on windswept fences and forest edges. In Ambient recordings, the western kingbird adds bright, assertive texture to soundscapes of wind, cricket, and open woodland birdsong.
