Harriet A. Jacobs
Harriet Ann Jacobs (1813–1897) wrote one of the most important American slave narratives — Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. Published under the pseudonym Linda Brent, the book tells of enslavement, sexual predation, years of concealment, and the fight for freedom with a candour rare in its time. Jacobs wrote as both witness and advocate, shaping how later readers understood the particular suffering of enslaved women. Her voice remains central to African American literature and to the history of emancipation.
