E. T. A. Hoffmann (1776–1822) was a German Romantic author, composer, and critic whose tales blur the line between reality and nightmare with elegant precision. The Nutcracker, The Sandman, and Mademoiselle de Scuderi reveal a world where art, desire, and madness reflect one another. Hoffmann influenced Poe, Baudelaire, Freud, and the whole tradition of uncanny literature. His fiction is witty, unsettling, and still startlingly modern.
