Alfred Haddon

Alfred Cort Haddon (1855–1940) was a British anthropologist and ethnographer whose fieldwork in the Torres Strait helped transform anthropology from armchair theory into rigorous observation. A pioneer of modern ethnographic method, he brought careful recording of ritual, belief, and material culture to the study of human societies. His writings on magic and religion remain accessible introductions to comparative belief systems.
