Franz Xaver Gruber

Franz Xaver Gruber (1787–1863) was an Austrian schoolteacher and church organist in Arnsdorf, best known as the composer of the melody to Silent Night. Written in 1818 for Christmas Eve at the parish of Oberndorf, the carol has since travelled the world — one of the most beloved songs in any language.
