William Elliot Griffis

William Elliot Griffis (1843–1928) was an American minister, educator, and author who helped introduce Japanese history and culture to Western readers after years of teaching in Japan. His books on East Asian legend, religion, and daily life — including Fairy Tales of Old Japan — combined scholarly curiosity with vivid storytelling for a general audience.
