Zane Grey

Zane Grey (1872–1939) was the great popular mythmaker of the American frontier — one of the first authors to turn adventure fiction into a national industry. Obsessed with the real West, he travelled widely through Arizona and Utah and brought back stories of outlaws, ranchers, gunmen, and the women and landscapes that shaped their fate. His bestsellers, led by Riders of the Purple Sage, sold in millions and fed a growing hunger for Western romance in print and on screen. More than a hundred film adaptations followed. Grey's vigorous prose, vivid scenery, and clean-lined heroism still carry the DNA of the modern Western.
