Theophile Gautier

Théophile Gautier (1811–1872) was a French poet, novelist, critic, and champion of art for art's sake. A central figure between Romanticism and the later Symbolist and Decadent movements, he wrote with elegance and wit across poetry, fiction, and journalism. Writers from Baudelaire and Flaubert to Proust and Wilde admired his precision of style. His fantastical tales, including Clarimonde, remain among the most seductive examples of nineteenth-century French prose.
