Frederick Douglass

Frederick Douglass was a prominent African-American abolitionist, social reformer, and orator who sought to bring an end to the system of racialized chattel slavery in nineteenth-century America. His prolific writings, including autobiographies such as Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass and My Bondage and My Freedom, served as powerful tools for exposing the brutalities of bondage and advocating for its eradication. He was "the most important leader of the movement for African-American civil rights in the 19th century". Northerners at the time found it hard to believe that such a great orator had once been enslaved.
