Charles W. Chesnutt

Charles W. Chesnutt was a pioneering African-American writer of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, who made significant contributions to American literature through his work in both fiction and non-fiction. He is known for exploring themes of racial identity and issues related to race relations in the United States. His works often use satire, irony, and humor to explore the issues of slavery, segregation, and the ongoing struggle for racial equality that many African Americans experienced in this era. Two of his books were adapted as silent films in 1926 and 1927 by the African-American director and producer Oscar Micheaux. A commemorative stamp was printed in 2008.
