Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616) was a Spanish novelist, poet, and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the Spanish language and one of the most influential figures in world literature. His masterpiece, Don Quixote, published in two parts in 1605 and 1615, is often considered the first modern novel. A soldier, tax collector, and prisoner of war before becoming a full-time writer, Cervantes drew on a life of hardship and adventure to create works of extraordinary wit, humanity, and lasting power.
