Fanny Burney

Fanny Burney, an 18th-century English novelist and playwright, is widely considered an important literary figure in the period between the Romantic and Victorian eras. Her works often explored issues surrounding gender, the role of women, and class distinctions prevalent at the time. In particular, her epistolary novel Evelina remains a cornerstone of early feminist literature due to its critique of societal norms, especially those concerning female virtue and marriage. In 1786–1790 she held the post of "Keeper of the Robes" to Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, George III's queen. In 1793, aged 41, she married a French exile, General Alexandre d'Arblay.
