William Wells Brown

William Wells Brown was a prominent 19th century African-American author, abolitionist and activist. His life serves as an exemplary illustration of the struggles and successes of those who endured and triumphed over the oppressive social structure of the antebellum United States. Brown's work provides a unique insight into the autobiographical representations of black life during this era, demonstrating an unparalleled capacity to articulate the experiences of both enslaved and freed African-Americans. Born into slavery near Mount Sterling, Kentucky, Brown escaped to Ohio in 1834 at the age of 19. He was a member of Prince Hall Freemasonry.
