Henry Box Brown

Henry Box Brown was an African American abolitionist who famously mailed himself in a box from Richmond, Virginia to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in order to escape enslavement. His story serves as an important example of the ingenuity and courage employed by enslaved persons during their fight for freedom. Moreover, Brown's efforts highlight the resilience of individuals struggling against oppressive systems, and has become a symbol for the power of collective resistance within the African American community. For a short time, Brown became a noted abolitionist speaker in the northeast United States. Brown married and started a family with an English woman, Jane Floyd.
